EASY HANDMADE FACE MASKS FOR HEALTHCARE WORKERS

Healthcare workers wearing a face mask

Not since WWII has there been a call to come together as global citizens to face an enemy like the coronavirus (COVID-19) head-on.

I remember, as a kid, my mom telling me stories of our family’s history and involvement in WWII.

While the men in the family fought overseas, my grandmother and her mother did their part working in the factories.

Just like my family members before me, I answered the call, serving over 20 years with one tour in Iraq.

As I listen to the news of the global pandemic spreading around the world, the story told to me as a child has a new meaning to me today.

The Greatest Generation has taught us, we as a nation and our allies can only win and make the world a better and more peaceful place by working together.

DIY FACE MASKS FOR HEALTHCARE WORKERS

    Surgical Mask Shortage

You may have read or heard on the news there is a severe shortage of masks, gowns, and gloves also known as personal protective equipment (PPE) around the world.

Healthcare workers are risking their lives to protect and take care of the public and then quarantining themselves from their families to reduce the risk of bringing home the virus from being forced to reuse masks due to lack of protective gear.

Our health care professionals need PPE to stay healthy and safe while diagnosing and treating patients with coronavirus.

While federal, state, and local governments are working diligently together to increase the production of essential life-saving equipment, no one knows the date or time, down to the hour or milliseconds on how long it will take to get the essential items in the hands of health care works at hospitals.

Supplies could take days, weeks, or even months to arrive.

    Reusing N-95 Masks

Under normal circumstances, N-95 masks are thrown away between treating each patient.

Healthcare professionals are taught it is unsanitary to reuse a mask.

As supplies start to run low, doctors and nurses find themselves at a decision point.

Go against what was learned in medical school and choose between reusing a mask or wearing a bandana?

The World Health Organization (WHO) does not recommend using cloth masks under any circumstances.

Alternative practices put healthcare workers at an increased risk of respiratory illness and viral infections. What does this mean for a patient waiting to be seen?

It means one less health professional on the front lines doing battle with the invisible enemy COVID-19.

Using a fabric face mask to cover an N-95 mask can aid in extending its use but is not the right action to take. Cloth masks in no way replace N-95 masks.

Healthcare workers need personal protective equipment sooner than later.

    Masks for Healthcare Workers

Sewing masks for local hospitals and nursing homes is one way to help in the short-term.

I am sharing a video from a local news article I found in my recommended news feed on how to make homemade 100% cotton face masks.

The instructions are simple and easy, meet CDC face mask guidelines and requires just three items: a sewing machine, 100% cotton, and elastic.

    100 Million Mask Donation Challenge

Fabric and elastic can be purchased at your local fabric store that carries sewing supplies (if it’s open) or online from JoAnn Fabrics, which is currently offering 20% off your total order.

In-person shopping and curbside pickup is available. Be sure to check their website for store hours.

When my grandmother was alive, JoAnn Fabrics was the store she would get all her supplies from to crotchet doilies, sew clothes for dolls, and country-western singers.

I can only imagine if she were alive today, we would be sitting at her sewing machine, making face masks together.

The JoAnn Fabrics near my house lately have experienced an uptick in traffic with lines wrapped around the block of good-hearted individuals stepping up and accepting the challenge of donating 100 million masks to healthcare workers.

If you’re not a fan of standing in long lines, I recommend ordering online and trying out curbside pickup.

Before donating homemade cloth face masks, check with your local hospital first about the hospital’s policy for accepting home-sewn face covers.

Alternative Ways to Help Healthcare Professionals

If you don’t sew or your sewing machine is out of commission and want to join the effort to help, here are a few ideas:

    • Donate to GiveMN (if you live in Minnesota), your local non profit organization, or church.
    • Start a PPE collection effort by reaching out to local nail salons, construction companies, and veterinary clinics for N-95 masks, gowns, and gloves. Visit your state’s emergency website to find surgical mask drop off locations and times.
    • Support small business owners and buy soft and washable homemade cotton face mask covers from Etsy shop owners. I love buying local and supporting my community entrepreneurs.

While we stay at home and practice social distancing, it doesn’t mean we have to feel helpless.

Contact your local government representative and advocate for the immediate local production of PPE for our healthcare workers fighting at the frontlines.

Many of these healthcare workers have families. Please don’t allow a lack of planning, resources, and bureaucracy over this fast-spreading disease result in a child losing a parent to COVID-19.

We have the power and means to ensure our healthcare workers, neighbors, and loved ones are safe by slowing the pace of this pandemic.

    Random Acts of Kindness

Homemade face masks are great for caregivers, loved ones with allergies, keeping in droplet from sneezing or coughing, cleaning around the house, going outside to get food and keep you from touching your face.

Acts of kindness don’t have to stop with making cloth masks.

In addition to the elderly being vulnerable, another group of individuals that isn’t being talked about as much as veterans, the disabled and the homeless.

Homemade hand sanitizer makes wonderful gifts for neighbors and homeless shelters taking a few minutes to make.

Need to make a face covering in a pinch? Learn how to make a mask using two items already in your home in less than a minute.

Check out my post, DIY No-Sew Cloth Mask At Home to wear in public.

If you live near a distillery, reach out to them and encourage them to make in-house hand sanitizers to help combat shortages just like Portland, Oregon’s Shine Distillery and Grill, and other distilleries.

We’re in this together. Our efforts will save millions of lives!

ARE BLOGGING COURSES WORTH YOUR TIME AND MONEY?

Woman working on her laptop taking blogging courses while sitting on the couch

You’re a new business owner or entrepreneur who is looking for resources on how to start a blog, use marketing by social media to promote a new Etsy store, use social media platforms (Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter) to drive website traffic.

You don’t have a lot of money to spend initially, but to learn the art and science of everything about blogging on your own is a little overwhelming and could use a little help to lighten up the load.

Are blogging courses worth your time and money? The answer is yes. Let me explain why.

ARE BLOGGING COURSES WORTH YOUR TIME AND MONEY?

Advantages Of Taking A Blogging For Beginners Course

One benefit of taking an online course on social media marketing and blogging for beginners is saving yourself time spending hours online going down a rabbit hole reading multiple blogs and watching YouTube tutorials.

Someone has gone and done the research, the leg work, and can provide you tips and practices, success, and failures so you don’t make the same mistakes they did when starting out.

Did you know before starting a blog, it’s recommended to have 12-15 articles written? You might be scratching your head asking why.

Imagine having a blog with just five articles on the site. For one, it’s a waste of time and money to pay for a theme and domain with very few articles.

Second, once readers get through the five articles, one reader might return the week after to read a new post.

If you are not posting at least one blog a week or gaining subscribers through an email list to provide updates to, readers will lose interest and go visit another site.

An image of a laptop, smartphone, notebook sitting on a table.

If you’re intent is to create a play by play journal for friends and family, that is fine, but I thought you were looking to turn your side hustle into a full-time job where you can work from anywhere and set your own hours?

If you have at least 10 articles ready to publish and plan on writing one article a week, that is enough for readers to mull over while you work on writing new content.

I write articles three months out. The time allows me to make tweaks to my articles before being published and to research new content ideas.

It’s a nice cushion for when I experience writer’s block and need a break from my laptop to gain some inspiration from my other hobby of travel photography.

Taking a beginning blogging course online will teach you techniques on how to drive traffic to your website.

      Website Navigation Design

One pet peeve of mine that is directly from my days in sales/retail management is a website that is hard to navigate when shopping online.

A second pet peeve is quickly building a site or a blog and not testing it before going live. This is a tell-tale sign of someone who lacks a technical background. What am I talking about you ask?

Ever visited a site that takes more than three clicks to navigate only to find that the article or clothing item isn’t there, or no longer exists because you see a 404 code?

The human attention span is short. Having dropdowns with no categories listed and no links are another example. Having a jacked website is a wonderful way to lose visitors.

When I was finalizing what kind of site I wanted, the first thing I did was visit blogs and sites and navigated their sites. Next, I sketched out on paper what I wanted my home page to look like.

I am not in the habit of throwing people under the bus and think it’s uncharitable to provide links to bad websites. We all have to start somewhere.

Here is some homework for you. Visit a couple of retail sites like Dr. Bronner’s (and their blog site), The Body Shop, AVEDA, Amazon, Target and a couple of blogs you have pins saved to your Pinterest account and spend a minute of two navigating.

Then ask yourself what you like or dislike about each site.

I know how to get past broken links and pages in order to find an article, I will only go the extra mile if the information I am searching for is worth the effort which is rare.

      Beginner Blogging Mistakes

Too many individuals are in a rush to start a blog with bad information from social media posts that they will become an overnight success and make money right away.

While a blog site might look pretty and inviting, I don’t know about you, but I find writing articles a lot of work.

In a sea of bloggers, the only way to stand out is to use social media marketing to promote your blog online so you can spend more time growing your business and write about topics that interest your readers.

An image of a laptop with words in front

Before you decide to go all in, I have one word of advice. Don’t quit your day job just yet! Taking your time to learn how to set up your website and blog will pay off in the long run.

If the stuff I mentioned about issues with websites is new to you, have no ideas what I am talking about, no very tech-savvy, taking a blogging course teaches you step by step on how to navigate these problems with ease.

There are a lot of free blogging courses out there, but a little investment can go a long way to get in-depth information that you wouldn’t get from a free online course.

Online Blogging And Pinterest Marketing Courses

If you’re into social media, taking an online marketing course can teach you how to leverage your existing social media platforms currently in use.

I have two blogging courses that are worth investing in short-term for long-term gains on turning your start-up into a money-making business:

One of the things I like about winter time is the natural slowing down that occurs and being able to play catch up on things that go on the back burner from spring until fall.

I like to take advantage to learn something new while being snowed in or too lazy to brave the cold in favor of warmth and relaxation.

The brief stay indoors allows me to clean up my website, tweak a couple of articles, and learn how to maximize social media and online marketing.

Being a tennis fan, for two weeks, I sit glued to my tv watching the Australian Open wondering why I haven’t made the 17-hour trek out there yet to experience Melbourne in person.

Watching tennis balls fly back and forth for three to five sets makes me dizzy.

Watching, I mean listening to tennis balls and sneakers skid back and forth on the court for me is a great time to write three months out and knock out 12 articles while sipping on a glass of vino.

      Online Course On Blogging

When it came time to start my blog, I felt like I had nothing to lose by signing up for an online course on blogging for beginners by one of New York Times best-selling authors with years of travel experience.

Nomadic Matt’s Superstar Blogging Course was within my budget compared to others that were asking for $200 or more and lacked the reputation Matt has built over the past 10 years.

The course takes you through the technical aspects step by step of getting your blog up and running, ways to monetize your blog through affiliate marketing, tips, and ideas on using social media to drive traffic to your site, and what mistakes to avoid.

How To Use Pinterest For Blogging

Pinterest is not only fun, free to use, but it’s an underutilized social media platform that is worth learning more about when it comes to Pinterest marketing.

The potential for steady and constant traffic from pins remaining searchable over time is huge. Check out these demographics of Pinterest users:

      • 300 million people are active on Pinterest every month
      • 40% of New Signups are Men; 60% New Signups are Women
      • Half of Pinterest users earn $50K or higher per year
      • Pinterest users are under the age of 49
      • 70% of users are female
      • 50% of pinners live outside the United States
      • Millennials use Pinterest as much as Instagram
      • 80% of US mothers who use the internet uses Pinterest

Learning the ins and outs of Pinterest and gaining an introduction to automated scheduling of pins are two reasons to invest in taking a Pinterest course.

The second online course I recommend is Pinterest Traffic Avalanche by Create and Go bloggers Lauren and Alex.

      Free Pinterest Scheduler

If you are a Pinterest user who is still manually pinning, it’s time to start automating your pinning process.

To increase traffic to your website, you have to post multiple times a day on social media. The recommendation is to pin 10-15 times a day on Pinterest. Who has time to manually pin every day?

      Tailwind banner

At first, it sounds easy, but what about when you go on vacation or go to a location with no cell reception or wifi? Automating the pinning process with simple Pinterest scheduling using an app like Tailwind will save time doing it yourself for free.

      Why Schedule Pins On Pinterest

Scheduling pins allows you to focus on growing your fan base and learning new skills to build up your brand over time so you CAN transition from part-time side hustler into a full-time digital nomad.

What is $100 for a blogging or social media course compared to going from making no money from your blog to six figures?

Are blogging courses worth your time and money? The answer is yes if you’re willing to take the time to learn how to draw readers back over and over again to your site.

Check out this video on how one user went from 121 to 86,000 views on her blog in 5 months with Pinterest.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF WORKING FROM HOME

Woman sitting on a couch working from home.

Would you quit a job in favor of a workplace that allows remote and flexible working, designing your day around your work, improve work-life balance, time to explore hobbies, and spend quality time with your family?

The hustle and bustle of working in a big city combined with the heightened stress of commuting eventually take their toll and can increase health problems.

      Health Risks Of Long Commutes

Bad weather, traffic jams, lengthy commutes, and accidents can cause stress, anger, and anxiety.

Long commutes can raise cortisol and adrenal levels affecting your health and increasing the risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Physical and mental health conditions, chronic headaches, and backaches to sleep disturbances, fatigue, concentration problems, digestive problems like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and high blood pressure can become stronger over time.

If you haven’t worked from home before, start small with a trial run of working remotely 1-2 times a week.

Laptop and monitor sitting on a table

Allow time to see and feel the effects of improving your mental and physical health and money staying in your pocket from not having to fill up your gas tank a couple of times a week.

Saving for that trip to Europe just got easier.

Physically commute to work either biking or walking to get a low-impact workout without spending hours in the gym.

Not only does physical activity improve your health, mood, and brain function, but active participation in creative activities can increase productivity.

      Information Communication Technology Tools

Advances in telecommuting technology in the past ten years and companies wanting to save money from overhead costs on renting office space are promoting efficiency, creativity, and productivity by offering remote and flexible working options.

Access and affordability of information communication technology tools (ICT), computers, smartphones, emails, video conferencing, blogs, wikis, instant chat, messaging) enables creativity, teamwork, and collaboration.

Making it possible to work from anywhere and anytime, the same way as in an office environment.

Efficiency and creativity don’t have to be limited to one physical location. With fewer distractions in an open office, constant interruptions, drive-bys from co-workers, lack of privacy, and noisy conversations, when you’re working from home, it is easier to concentrate and stay focused.

      What’s in it for you?

Remote workers are less likely to experience burn-out.

A long commute to work of 30 minutes or more is cut-down to 7 seconds or however long it takes to walk up the stairs to your home office.

      Change Of Scenery

In case of care needs, flexible working arrangements help employees to remain close to children and partners.

Work-life balance allows you to pursue your interests, hobbies, outings with friends, art, sports, and holistic habits for overall health and wellness.

Making time to embrace nature, work out outdoors, and enjoy leisure time is right for mental and physical health.

How does switching it up to a remote/coffee shop work style, walking, or biking to work remotely sound to you?

BEST NATIONAL PARK TRIPS: ROCKY MOUNTAIN

Trees and mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.

Leave the world behind and experience one of the world’s most extended ranges that cross over the Continental Divide at Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park.

Surrounded by Comanche Peak Wilderness to the north, Indian Peaks Wilderness to the south, Roosevelt National Forest to the east, and Arapaho National Forest to the west, Rocky Mountain National Park has over eight self-guiding nature trails to choose from.

With elevations of over 12,000 feet, hiking along Alpine Ridge Trail at Rocky Mountain National Park rewards travel photography enthusiasts with its rugged beauty and ecosystems starting at 9,000 feet to over 11,400 feet.

A park pass is required for entry into all the US National Parks. 1-day, 7-day, annual, or lifetime passes can be purchased online or at the nearest federal recreation sit.

A free annual pass is available for U.S. Military (current U.S. military members and dependents in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard as well as Reserve and National Guard members).

      Hiking

The number one activity that brings visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park is watching the large population of wildlife.

If you are a recreational hiker, there are gentle trails on the east side less than one mile with a 20 feet elevation gain: Bear Lake, Hidden Vally Nature Trail, Lily Lake, Moraine Park Discovery Center Nature Trail, and Sprague Lake.

Lush meadows, mountain views, and a historic cabin and dude ranch from the 1920s on the west side have two trails: Adams Falls, Coyote Valley Trail, and Holzwarth Historic Site.

There are two trails on Trail Ridge Road: Alpine Ridge Trail and Tundra Communities Trail. The trails are accessible only when Trail Ridge is open.

Camping In Rocky Mountain National Park

A cabin in the wilderness under the Milky Way galaxy.

Stay overnight under the stars at one of these five campgrounds o designated wilderness site:

      • Aspendglen: 52 sites at 8,220 feet from late May – late September.
      • Glacier Basin: 150 sites at 8,5000 from late May – mid September.
      • Long Peaks: 26 sites at 9,405 feet from late June – September.
      • Moraine Park: 244 sites in the summer and 77 sites in the winter at 8,160 feet open year-round.
      • Timber Creek: 98 sites at 8,900 feet from late May – late October.
      • Sprague Lake Accessible Wilderness Campsite: 12 campers with up to five wheelchair users can stay at the site.

To make a reservation, visit recreation.gov or call 877-444-6777.

      On Top Of The World

What feels like the top of the world, the Rockies are best enjoyed in the late fall. The weather is a little cooler, traffic is slightly less congested, and the occasional snowfall at the higher elevations makes the scenic drive on Trail Ridge Road with mountain views worth it.

Who can say “no” to the chance of an Instagram worthy experience to showcase the amazing wildlife like elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer, yellow-bellied marmot, blue skies, and those long ranges of the Rocky Mountains stretching from Alaska to the southern border into Mexico and stunning snow-covered peaks?

If you have a fear of heights like I do, the beautiful scenery makes you quickly level up and put your fear of heights on the back burner. That is until it’s time to make the drive back down.

      Scenic Drives

You have a choice of two scenic routes that make a complete loop around the national park, US Hwy 7 to the east and US Hwy 34 to the west.

Trail Ridge Road is one of the highest and most scenic routes to take with a view of Longs Peak in the distance stretching to heavens at 14,259 feet.

Before exploring the extraordinary alpine views, I recommend stopping at the Kawaunneche Visitor Center on US Hwy 34 north of Grand Lake to learn about the history, landscape, and wildlife that call Rocky Mountain National Park home through exhibits, short park movies, and scheduled ranger-led programs.

Driving up is easy and takes a little over an hour to reach the Alpine Visitor Center. I recommend arriving early in the morning to drive the scenic loop as park roads can get extremely busy.

There are plenty of spots to pull over for rest or to take photos of the mountain ranges.

One of the peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Expect when driving down from the top of Trail Ridge Road to see an increase in traffic of stop and go. During the summer and fall weekends, roads are busiest from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For those of you who experience white knuckle driving through higher elevations, I am warning you ahead of time so you are prepared like I was to all your time to prepare for musical and audiobook distractions so you can go to your happy place when it’s time.

Trail Ridge Road has few guardrails.

Don’t let the narrow and winding road deter you from experiencing the visual beauty of the alpine tundra.

Electronic dance music (EDM) is my favorite to get me motivated to take on height challenges and good distraction to chill me out while staying alert for the two-hour round trip.

Be Prepared For Changing Weather Conditions

As you go higher in elevation, the temperature gets colder and can drop 15-20 degrees. When I visited Rocky National Park in late September, starting my drive, the temperature was in the 70s (Fahrenheit). When I reached above 11,400 feet, it was in the 50s.

Being from Minnesota, the cooler weather felt great, but the altitude, not so much. To ease into the change in elevation from sea level, I started my one-week road trip in Rapid City, South Dakota.

I drove a scenic loop visiting Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, The Mammoth Site, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s south unit in North Dakota.

By the time I arrived for an overnight stop in Denver, I was feeling acclimated. If you do plan on hiking some of the trails, make sure to bring layers and plenty of water.

The higher the elevation, the thinner and drier the air. It can be bright and sunny one moment and then change to the snow flurries and a howling wind that cut through your body in a matter of minutes if you don’t have the proper wind and waterproof outerwear with you.

Don’t let cloud cover fool you. Sunlight is intense at higher elevations and can make you more dehydrated.

After exploring Rocky Mountain National Park, with your annual park pass in hand, head south and explore Colorado’s three other magnificent national parks, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Great Sand Dunes, and Mesa Verde. Happy exploring!

WHEN TO LEAVE A JOB YOU LOVE DUE TO CHRONIC ILLNESS PART 2

Woman looking out a window day dreaming.

Upon notification of you leaving the company, your boss or co-workers may not take the news well and can end up expressing sadness and regret in weird ways, like being hostile versus being empathetic.

Chronic illness is not a game. Mocking, making fun, or deliberately trying to humiliate another person is nasty and purely uncharitable.

No one should have to put up with an office bully or an unsupportive and lousy boss. You didn’t ask to get sick.

I experienced workplace harassment myself when I provided my supervisor with months notice due to increased complications with fibromyalgia, brain fog, chronic pain, headaches, and vertigo.

What I find interesting, when it comes to animal injuries and disabilities, humans are more compassionate to animals than to their fellow human beings.

We publicly call out animal abusers, demanding justice, punishment (rightfully so), and then reach into our pockets to contribute financially to an improved quality of life for the abused animal.

If there ever was an appropriate time to engage in dialogue, have a deep and thoughtful conversation about chronic illness, disability, and how employers can help employees to manage a chronic illness at work with reasonable work accommodations and thrive, that time is now.

WHEN TO LEAVE A JOB YOU LOVE PART 2

Chronic Illness Is Not A Joke

Arriving in pairs at your desk in the morning to give the greeting of the day with off the wall comments, and then instigating verbal confrontations to get a reaction is pretty outlandish.

The ill behavior does make for some great reality TV, not.

My advice to you. It’s perfectly normal to show a lack of interest in playing games with adults masquerading as kids.

One of the plus sides being in constant pain is you don’t have the energy, drive, or give a $h^! to engage in verbal sparring.

Resting b!$@& face or RBF works wonders.

        Performance Management Issues

Maintaining the same work performance before an invisible illness and engage in daily self-care and healthy holistic habits can become increasingly difficult to manage.

It slowly became apparent with each passing day that everyone in the office knew about my invisible illness.

The daily harassment got so bad that at the encouragement of friends and family, I agreed to their good idea to expedite my departure from the organization by leaving three months early.

An image of a woman being pointed at.

Before leaving your job, if your replacement hasn’t been hired or identified internally, make sure your staff has the necessary tools to succeed after you until that person arrives.

On my last day, I sent out my last emails, quietly packed up the remainder of my things, turned in my company-issued equipment, and took my team out for a goodbye lunch to express my gratitude, and calm their nerves.

Earning a reputation for working well with different departments and agencies over the years can pay dividends in the form of an available support system that will be at your staffs’ fingertips on speed dial.

        The Attempt To ‘Save Face

Depending on the position you hold in an organization, submitting a letter of resignation due to chronic illness can become political, less about you, and more about organizational perceptions and the reality of the underrepresentation of skills and colors of the rainbow.

There is nothing like calling ‘time’ on the psychological trickery of a boss attempting to spread propaganda by placing the blame on you for leaving the organization in an attempt to ‘save face’.

No more, “if you leave, you will disappoint me” threats. Enough of that already.

It’s not your job to make people feel comfortable with your medical condition or make the big, “I’m leaving my job because I’m sick” announcement with balloons and streamers.

Let someone else in the organization answer the 99 questions of why disability discrimination and workplace harassment is allowed and why the best and brightest are silently walking out the door unapologetically.

If you hate being the center of attention, come in after-hours to pack up your things.

On your last day, walk out the same way you came on your first day on the job, out the front door.

Quitting My Job Saved My Life

The experience of leaving a job you love can make you feel like a wounded animal, outnumbered with your head hunched over, and broken.

Trust me. You’re not broken. You’re just taking a rest to catch your breath before that next hoop shot, touchdown, ace, grand slam, or whatever sports analogy comes to mind.

Force yourself to press the reset button. Even if you feel a little shaky, force yourself to put one foot in front of the other.

You don’t have to do this alone. Surround yourself with people who care, support you, and leave the haters in the dust.

The ground isn’t going to crumble underneath you and if it does, your Apple Smartwatch, enabled with Emergency SOS will notice something isn’t right and automatically call 911.

Create Distance And Space To Heal

Upon leaving my office, I immediately created distance from my job and everyone associated with it.

Luckily there weren’t any children or significant assets to fight over in this less than amicable career divorce.

At least I got to keep my last name, engraved nameplate, and the free Microsoft Excel games I never got to play on company time.

Be prepared for the conspiracy theorists to emerge from under a rock who claim to know better than you why you left your job.

You may see an increased amount of social media traffic scrolling through your Facebook and LinkedIn pages anonymously, looking for clues and bread crumbs.

Man standing on a beach looking out at the ocean

Hi, _________. I see you trolling me.

That vacation photo was a cryptic code for???

        Well, let’s find out!

Oh, that one photo said it all. Me looking up to the sky over the horizon standing on a beach pondering life’s biggest mysteries, “what the heck am I going to eat for dinner?”

Wait a minute, who is that in the photo?

The look for bread crumbs and insight came to an abrupt end.

        Walking Your Own Path

Celebrate your path to healing with a long road trip by visiting a couple of national parks.

The rugged landscapes and beautiful sunsets will remind you that life is precious and that those ankle biter problems aren’t that important.

Celebrate the milestones of your career, make the necessary lifestyle changes one day at a time, and get back what was stolen from you—your health and happiness.

The decision to leave my job wasn’t made overnight.

My health reality check came from my doctors, who stopped me from staying the course and overdoing it by working myself to death to prove there was nothing wrong with me.

No one should have to choose between health and wellness, being a caregiver for a sick parent, and a job.

I finally acknowledged I needed a lifestyle change and fast.

I was not happy about leaving a career I loved.

As I look back at my decision, quitting my job was the right decision and saved my life.

Learning And Growing Can Shape Your Tomorrow

Life’s greatest lessons have a mysterious and deliberate way of communicating to us in ways we don’t understand at the most inconvenient times. Time waits for no one.

Not everyone walks away from a job with a feeling of accomplishment.

Be unapologetic at what you have accomplished. It takes a lot of effort to erase your achievements from the record books.

The body isn’t meant to be in constant fight or flight mode long-term, but the body does have the means and the desire to heal itself when not operating in a hostile environment of continuous stress.

While one chapter closes, a new chapter simultaneously opens for you.

See your challenging experience as a learning opportunity to explore new career options.

Before quitting your job, make sure you have a financial plan and can maintain focus on your health while searching for other career opportunities.

In an attempt to reduce overhead costs on renting office space, travel expenses for employees, utilities, more companies are working hard to recruit and retain carefully sought knowledge and talent, by allowing employees to work from home.

Nordic countries Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have led the way on flexible work arrangments for decades.

Many chronic illness sufferers continue to work, going on to succeed in different career fields, or launch successful online businesses while prioritizing their health.

Thank The Universe For Your Haters

So there are no hard feelings, thank those around you. Please do it for you and no one else.

Your thank you letter, or email could start something like this:

To my office bullies, lurkers, and stalker who thought calling me names and accusing me of being a “faker” and not believing me when I spoke up about my (fill in the blank) diagnosis or medical condition.

I didn’t speak up for you, but for the silent majority fighting to get through the day in constant pain and people living with chronic illness who live in fear of anticipated stigma in the workplace struggling to keep working in a rewarding career they enjoy.

Thank you so very much for going out of your way to deliberately make it harder to do my job every day, while indulging in acts of intimidation and provocation.

It made for some good reality TV.

Woman sitting on rocks overlooking Lake Superior.

Two people against one were a bit unfair, even with my one hand tied behind my back.

Thank you for keystroking through cyberspace staring, glaring, and laughing at me while deliberately invading my privacy unannounced, without permission, and using company resources to do it.

Thank you for giving me the confidence to always believe in myself, no matter what, and the importance of global citizenship.

To think I can achieve anything and take the next steps in holistic living is the best gift ever.

Thank you for teaching me how to navigate and terminate harmful and toxic anomalies by throwing out the old and worn-out doormat and rolling out a new ‘welcome’ mat for my new best life.

Sending love and light. I wish you well.

Now put the pen down on the letter, or print out the email, walk over to the shredder (make sure it’s a cross-cut paper shredder) next to your desk, fireplace, or fire pit and let the negative energy burn into the abyss to tiny pieces of ash.

It’s over, time to move on. Permit yourself to live the best life on your terms.

My Story Has A Happy Ending

The turmoil I experienced does have a happy ending. I no longer have to worry about verbal threats and digital taunts adversely impacting my career development or showing up on my doorstep.

I will never return to the cubical farm. That ship has sailed.

I have the best job in the world, being a caregiver to a parent who demands to maintain some type of independence.

It’s been at times frustrating, yet the most rewarding job of my career.

If you are a caregiver, you know all about the challenges and triumphs each day brings.

Learning how to promote independence in the elderly has positive benefits for you and your loved one like making time for self-care without the guilt or losing yourself.

By encouraging independence, seniors have the opportunity to be more self-sufficient and maintain a better quality of life for themselves whether at home or in a residential care home.

This is possible due to having the option and flexibility to set my own hours and work from anywhere.

Life’s Greatest Lessons Are Learned Through Pain

Life’s greatest lessons are learned through pain. The light of life is given to those willing to accept life’s struggles, explore the meaning of truth, and find acceptance.

Even after the rug is pulled from under you, again and again, facing adversity head-on will bring more joy in life.

Don’t punish yourself and don’t blame yourself. Again, see what you can learn from the experience.

The adverse reaction from those around isn’t about you. The negative response means what you’re doing is right, folks are just plain jealous, and you’re more famous than you thought.

The proof? Right now an office bully is trolling your social media page.

It’s nice to be admired now and again isn’t it?

Bullying Based On Stigma Creates Isolation

Maintaining a sense of humor and facing everyday challenges and triumphs of an invisible illness head-on is my daily mantra. If you can’t laugh at yourself, somebody else will.

Anticipated stigma doesn’t help alleviate chronic illness and improve health and well being. Bullying creates social isolation.

When faced with adversity, remain resolute and “keep a stiff upper lip”. You have to keep carrying on and not give up. Refuse to be written off.

It doesn’t make you weak or lack emotion, just the opposite.

You’re just tweaking the art of giving zero f^#%$ in seeking permission to stand in your truth to look the invisible illness in the eye and, instead, explore healthy ways to manage chronic pain instead of just living with it.

WHEN TO LEAVE A JOB YOU LOVE DUE TO CHRONIC ILLNESS

Woman sitting and looking out over the horizon at a lake and mountains.

Are you thinking about throwing in the towel and resigning from a career you love due to chronic illness?

Deciding to leave a job due to chronic illness is not an easy decision to make.

One day you wake up and seem fine, do a couple of tasks like run errands, house chores, take short walks outside, and then you’re out for a couple of days in bed.

Increased chronic pain can interfere with being able to work and contemplate being unemployed.

To make matters worse, you’re fending off gossip, office bullies, people who think they know more about what’s going on in your life than you do, and an unsupportive boss who enjoys adding to your chronic stress by allowing co-workers to treat you horribly.

Workplace discrimination due to a medical condition doesn’t have to be tolerated.

        Anticipated Stigma And Bullying

I am putting out a BOLO (be on the lookout) on the serial predator, pervert, unsupportive boss, and co-worker masquerading as an office bully that promotes and participates in acts of demeaning and illicit behavior towards individuals living and working with a chronic illness.

Anticipated stigma doesn’t help alleviate chronic illness and improve health and well being. Bullying creates social isolation.

In case you, your boss, or co-workers aren’t aware, disability discrimination and workplace harassment are unlawful.

You don’t have to tolerate workplace harassment. You can file a discrimination complaint.

Choose the latter option after you have exhausted all mediation attempts with your boss, labor relations representative, and human resources office.

Regardless of the path you choose, healing starts with looking the invisible illness in the eye.

Let me tell you a story about the sickening and demeaning experiences employees go through every day who work with a chronic illness and experience disability discrimination in the form of office bullying.

Injection of sarcasm will happen every couple of paragraphs to lighten up the mood and reveal teachable moments so this kind of treatment across organizations cease to exist.

My Medical Mystery And Root Cause

More than 25 million U.S. adults have some level of daily pain, and 10.5 million have considerable pain every day.

Over time, chronic pain can affect your emotional and mental state. Not too many people know chronic pain sufferers are at an increased risk of suicide.

In the long-run, more harm will be done if you stay the course, ignore your body, and not prioritize your health.

After being pricked and poked for over five years and tested for Lyme disease, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndrome, low back pain, headaches, and fatigue.

My symptoms slowly and quietly began nine years earlier, beginning with fatigue.

I made an appointment to see a doctor. My labs came back normal. I was diagnosed with depression.

        Medical Misogyny

I knew I wasn’t depressed but had no idea of what was going on with my body or how to explain my symptoms except my body was exhausted and sleep-deprived.

Too often women experience ‘medical misogyny’ when trying to make people believe her pain.

Some doctors think women, especially women of color are exaggerating, leading to being misdiagnosed, ignoring severe medical conditions, and not getting proper medical treatment.

Spooked from the experience at my doctor’s office, I convinced myself the symptoms I was experiencing were all “in my head”.

Soon after, I would experience multiple physical injuries back to back.

Even with rounds of physical therapy, I didn’t feel 100%.

Later on, I started to become anxious and moody, feeling like someone was poking me with a pin cushion all day and all night.

Before the chronic conditions, I was an extrovert, a social butterfly who loved being around people and going out.

As the pain, chronic migraines, and episodes of vertigo increased, I started thinking about quitting my job.

Little did I know, my body was in a state of crisis.

My chronic illness turned me into an introvert with an extreme case of social anxiety.

I stopped going outside, hanging out with friends and people from work, spending every weekend in bed because I was too exhausted and in pain.

I gave myself a hard time calling myself ‘lazy’ and would work out harder than before to prove there was nothing wrong with me.

Pushing myself physically didn’t help the situation at all.

I was running out of nine lives.

Deciding When To Leave A Job

Telling your boss about your condition or ailment can be scary. You don’t know what his/her reaction will be.

One of two scenarios can occur.

Your boss may know a colleague or a family member facing similar challenges with an invisible illness and promote a change in hours and duties.

Or you’re punished for having a chronic illness with more projects while co-workers get a free pass.

All because you don’t look visibly sick.

After seven years of tests, labs, x-rays, and MRIs, I received another diagnosis.

I was finally able to put a name to my condition, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain syndrome.

While I was happy to know what was wrong with me, with the doctor reassuring me I couldn’t die from the chronic illness (not true for all, remember the stats I provided earlier on chronic pain sufferers?), I needed to learn more about this condition and what it meant for my quality of life.

After my symptoms continued to worsen, the stressful environment and constant office bullying led me to verbally inform my boss years in advance that I would be leaving my position.

I remember drafting and turning in my letter of resignation like it was yesterday.

That week, pain and anxiety levels were higher than usual, and nothing was going right in my personal and professional life.

Prior to submitting my letter of resignation, there was an assumption that I was getting special treatment because I was leaving work early.

Who knew, going to physical therapy, receiving acupuncture treatments, taking care of a sick parent all while trying to figure out what the heck was wrong health-wise was a crime.

        Talk about stressful.

I scheduled an office call to explain my medical condition to my boss and the reasons why it was the best decision for me to pass the torch onto someone else.

Visualization Techniques For Success And Healing

Before meeting with your supervisor, practice visualizing the conversation to anticipate reactions, behavioral patterns, and mood.

Playing the devil’s advocate ahead of time in your head prior to conversing with your supervisor will make you ten moves ahead to respond appropriately in the event the conversation goes well or sour.

Visualization techniques can be applied to accomplish goals and manage pain.

The response I received was, “if you leave your position, you will disappoint me.”

Before making any sudden decisions you may regret, always sleep on it.

Not the type to wilt like a wildflower and back down, the next day, I emailed my months notice resignation letter to the Human Resources department.

Nobody puts Baby in the corner or threatens her.

        What Am I Sick With?

I would spend late nights fighting off insomnia reading articles online that seemed to have been copied over and pasted onto multiple websites of no value in answering my question.

What was wrong with me, and what the heck was fibromyalgia? What impact would the invisible illness have on my life and career long-term?

I knew I wasn’t the only one in this world living with fibromyalgia.

Come to find out, I wasn’t the only one. I came across some useful information about alternative treatments. Thanks, Pinterest pinners!

Acupuncture treatments were effective in pain management.

At my first appointment, my acupuncturist revealed she had fibromyalgia for over 20 years.

A glimmer of hope began to emerge in getting some answers.

        Requesting A Reasonable Work Accommodation

Quitting your job should be the last resort, not the first.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for chronic pain sufferers as an invisible illness affects each person differently.

Lack of mobility adds to the heightened levels of physical, mental, and emotional stress.

A significant flare-up can make it impossible to keep up with the mental and physical demands of a job.

Requesting reasonable work accommodations (work from home, flexible time, and change in work hours) is a good place to start.

        Brain Fog Symptoms

I used to be good at memorization. Slowly I lost my words unable to speak.

Initially, I thought I suffered a stroke. What I was experiencing was brain fog.

I remember staying after hours to go over my projects and administrative paperwork to fix the typos and errors I made earlier in the day.

Working over 40 hours became commonplace to fix my mistakes.

The brain fog got so bad that I couldn’t hide it anymore. When making sales and marketing presentations to clients, I couldn’t speak without looking at my notecards.

        Workplace Harassment

Let’s go deeper into workplace harassment, chronic illness, and office bullies.

Navigating the workplace with an invisible illness isn’t easy.

Daily harassment can impair decision making, lead to throwing in the towel prematurely, and walk out on a career or job you love.

You know when you need to change careers when your peers, instead of being concerned, offering support and encouragement, begin talking to you like you’re incredibly stupid.

        Workplace Harassment Examples

Intimidation tactics like spreading false narratives, cornering you, following or waiting for you in the parking lot before or after work are a few examples of workplace harassment.

When no one is around, a colleague may approach you and say, “there is nothing wrong with you.”

These workplace harassment examples are only the beginning of psychiatric stigma and prejudice.

If your condition interferes with your work performance, don’t hesitate to communicate challenges to your boss.

There is no obligation to share your medical condition with your co-workers.

If you do, be selective of who you tell and ensure the individual(s) receiving this information respect your privacy and don’t go on an office gossip rampage.

We are talking about your health, not a game of checkers.

        Family And Medical Leave Act

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are laws designed to protect employees from being fired due to disability and medical reasons.

Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, eligible employees who work for a covered employer can take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in 12 months to tend to a severe health condition, take care of a family member, the birth or adoption of a child.

FMLA can offer peace of mind to take time off for regular doctor’s visits, treatments, and time to heal without worrying about the financial burden of unpaid leave.

Under ADA, companies are required to provide reasonable work accommodations for their employees.

If you’re a chronic pain sufferer, you know the challenges of experiencing a flare-up and trying to concentrate.

Chemo treatments and newly prescribed medication to manage your symptoms can make you feel more fatigued.

        Work Schedule Change Request

An office meeting with your boss, union rep or human resources representative allows the opportunity to explore work accommodation options.

Working from home is an example of reasonable work accommodation.

I made a change to my work schedule, working from home one day a week.

It worked for a while until I started missing my acupuncture appointments from working too late at home.

My acupuncturist told me, “if you want the treatments to work, you have to show up to your appointments.”

After looking at flexible schedule options, I changed my work schedule.

The day off allowed me to go to doctor’s appointments and be a caregiver to a sick parent.

Leave Donation Or Leave Sharing Program

Some companies and agencies offer a leave donation or leave sharing program to employees. The program can be useful if you experience complications with your chronic illness and have exhausted all your leave.

The program allows donations of paid time off, vacation, or sick leave between employees with personal or family medical emergencies.

Your Human Resources department can confirm the existence or non-existence of a leave program and options available.

Before I became ill, I rarely called in sick, let alone used my sick days. Luckily I accumulated a lot of sick leave and didn’t have to resort to using a leave program.

Individuals experiencing complications from a pregnancy, surgery, or need to care for a sick parent can benefit from the program.

Unfortunately, those who abuse time-off rules and honest people who follow create perceptions of scamming the system.

Risk of being bullied by individuals who feel they’re not getting their fair share increases.

As I mentioned earlier, be selective about who else knows about your chronic illness.

Ensure the individual(s) receiving this information, respect your privacy.

Even though FMLA and ADA offer employees protection, it doesn’t prevent your boss from letting you go due to conditions not related to disability, not meeting work performance standards, health, and safety concerns in the workplace.

Part 2 continues with examples of workplace harassment, tell-tale signs when it’s time to leave your job and work with an organization that wants your skills and knowledge on their team.

BEST NATIONAL PARK TRIPS: INDIANA DUNES

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore overlooking Lake Michigan

When you think of national parks, what comes to mind? Glacier, Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, Yosemite? Consider adding Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to your late summer or early fall travel bucket list.

Not only is the view of the Chicago skyline from Lake Michigan on a clear day with the naked eye an impressive sight to see, but the fine and soft sand between your toes will make you forget you’re in Indiana.

In 2019 the Indiana Dunes became the 61st newest US National Park. 15 miles of beaches hug Lake Michigan’s southern tip.

Oh, and the beaches, sand dunes, beautiful wetlands, and marshes, are some additional reasons to visit the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Getting To Indiana Dunes National Park

It can be a little confusing getting to Indiana Dunes National Park as there is also Indiana Dunes State Park.

The good news is if you live in the Midwest, you are less than 12 hours away from experiencing the amazing landscapes of the Hoosier state.

I recommend stopping at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center to obtain a map from a ranger and getting some recommendations of points of interest.

        Things To Do

        Bird Watching

If you’re a bird watcher, you won’t have to go far to spot various species of birds during spring and fall migrations like winter finches, sparrows, warblers, loon, and gulls hanging out in the black oak forests, button-bush marshes, flying over Lake Michigan scooping up the catch of the day.

        Hiking

50 miles of hiking trails whether its snowshoeing, running, walking, or biking, the various habitats of Indiana Dunes National Park keep you visually engaged with your eyes on the lookout for wildlife.

Just make sure to have a camera ready. You never know what you will see hanging out on the tree branches or coming out of the woods.

        West Beach

Large-scaled dunes greet you at the park’s West Beach. Give your legs a work out by hiking to the top of the Dune Succession Trail stairs.

        Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

With a combination of hiking trails and long stretches of beach along Lake Michigan, climbing 250 steps up the Dune Succession Trail stairs is worth the burn for breathtaking views like this.

Beach erosion is a problem. High waves and pounding waves are eating away at the shoreline washing away the dunes that the national park is named after. Be sure to stay on the trails.

        Tree Graveyards

As you explore the 50 hiking trails and walk on the beach, you will notice fallen trees. Wind erosion re-exposes trees buried by the sand where forests have been.

        Three Dune Challenge

Challenge yourself by climbing three of the highest sand dunes in Indiana. Mount Holden, Mount Tom, and Mount Jackson each have an elevation of fewer than 200 feet.

Athletes, groups o friends, and family test their fitness levels by attempting to hike up these three dunes with the reward of breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, the Chicago skyline in the distance, and bragging rights they conquered the three highest sand dunes in Indiana.

View of the Chicago skyline from Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
A view of the Chicago skyline from Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

200 feet might sound like nothing, but we are talking taking on vertical sandy climbs with a 40-degree slope.

The Three Dune Challenge starts at the Indiana Dunes State Park at the Nature Center. Are you up for the fitness challenge?

SELF-CARE: 5 HOLISTIC HABITS THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

An image of a woman at a yoga studio lying on the floor resting in Savasana or corpse pose.

Burning the candle at both ends can lead to an increased level of anxiety, burn out, and chronic illness.

It takes time to understand how thoughts and feelings contribute to anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.

Practicing self-care is key to maintaining or improving physical, mental, and emotional health.

The following five holistic habits are easy to include in your routine, daily self-care checklist will change your life by improving your health and well-being and provide stress relief.

        SELF-CARE: 5 HOLISTIC HABITS

          1. Acupuncture and Holistic Health

Acupuncture is an alternative treatment using an ancient natural approach to treat chronic pain and provide long-term relief. Acupuncture can help with the following conditions:

          • Depression
          • Headaches
          • Insomnia
          • Neck Pain
          • Digestive Disorders
          • Pain
          • Fibromyalgia
          • Back Pain
          • Hormone Imbalances
          • Foot Pain
          • Chronic Migraines
          • Lung Allergies

Community Acupuncture makes acupuncture accessible and affordable by creating a setting in which an acupuncturist sees multiple patients at one time versus one on one.

The place I go to has a sliding scale of $20-40. If you were to go to a private clinic, you could end up paying $60-75 per session.

If you have ever participated in a yoga session, you’re in a room full of people you may not know, but feel a sense of community there. To give you a better visual, check out the video below.

          <script src='https://v0.wordpress.com/js/next/videopress-iframe.js?m=1435166243'></script>

Community Acupuncture is a similar zen-like setting except there is a room of comfy lazy boy chairs where multiple patients receive treatments at the same time.

To find the nearest Community Acupuncture location near you, click here.

          2. Yoga for Relaxation

Savasana or corpse pose is the last pose done at the end of a yoga session. It’s a relaxing way to end your practice.

The deep restoration relaxes the body, calms the mind, and can have you leaving a yoga class walking on cloud nine.

Sometimes you will get a yoga teacher that will take the class through a guided meditation to bring them in touch with the physical body.

          Meditation and Body Awareness

Body scan meditation begins with bringing awareness to your breathing and body from the top of your head to the tip of your toes.

Acknowledging aches, pains, and tension in parts of the body, a person can become aware of emotional triggers contributing to discomfort.

I had been practicing yoga for many years. The recovery time between sessions started to become days if not weeks.

When I began to experience physical limitations and pain, I stopped my yoga practice.

Looking back, this wasn’t a good idea. I should have changed to a different style of yoga, but judged myself by how long I could be in a headstand.

When the pain was at it’s highest, doctors may recommend you go on medication.

I tried muscle relaxers, would almost fall asleep at my desk or at a meeting and then needed to take something else to stay awake.

The pain medication was a short-term solution. I was looking for a holistic long-term solution to manage pain.

          3. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Just like how yoga influences well being, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with rewiring the mind.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps patients understand how getting swept away in negative thoughts and feelings can affect behavior.

The way we think, how we handle stressful situations and it’s effects on personal and interpersonal relationships.

          Cognitive behavioral therapy model.

While I prefer to try holistic approaches first, I do not encourage anyone to forego medical treatments recommended by a primary care doctor.

Combining yoga, CBT with modern medicine can provide additional benefits in improving the quality of life versus doing one type of treatment and overtime reduce the number of prescribed medications taken.

          CBT Coping Strategies

Sessions are short-term focusing on identifying patterns, developing self-awareness through journaling and incorporating coping strategies like mindfulness.

Seeing a situation from a different point of view can stop fearing the worst.

Focusing on acknowledging negative emotions when they arise instead of avoiding them is what it means to be mindful and controlling the narrative, your experience.

CBT was a simple reminder of the corpse pose that left me feeling euphoric and how I missed doing yoga. I now do an at-home practice a couple of times a week.

          4. Cupping Therapy at Home

Instead of paying for cupping therapy sessions, a less expensive option is to practice cupping therapy at home.

Before attempting dry cupping at home, I recommend seeing a practitioner and doing 1-2 sessions to understand how the cups work.

An image of a woman receiving holistic health treatments on her face.

There are plenty of cupping therapy videos on YouTube that explain how to administer the cups and what areas of the body to avoid.

I own two different sets of cups. One set for the body with an extender to get hard to reach areas on my back.

The second set is for the face. Face cupping is good for preventing sinus headaches. I use cupping therapy after working out to speed up the recovery process.

I purchased a cupping therapy instructional book, The Guide to Modern Cupping Therapy: Your Step by Step Source for Vaccum Therapy.

The book contains 56 pages with lots of photos and recommendations on which areas of the body to apply cups for.

Conditions range from shoulder and back tension, IBS, plantar fasciitis, and sinus congestion.

          5. Epsom Salt Soak for Swelling and Sore Muscles

          Epsoak Epsom salts

Taking an Epsom salt bath before applying the cups can help to relax your muscles after a workout.

Soaking your feet in Epsom salt is a good natural remedy for plantar fasciitis, sensations of pins and needles in the feet, reducing swelling, foot and heel pain.

You might start off taking a daily Epsom salt muscle soak. As you experience improvements, switch to a couple of times a week followed by spot treatments with magnesium oil.

Whichever option you choose, it’s good to have Epsom salt on hand.

The body constantly strives to maintain a healthy balance. When the body becomes unbalanced, signs and symptoms of illness or pain appear.

Incorporating one or all five holistic approaches to optimize and maintain physical, emotional, and mental health is the perfect supplement for the general sense of well being all of strive to achieve.

          NO-COOK HEALTHY SALAD RECIPE

beet and wheat berry healthy salad.

This no-cook healthy salad recipe will be a favorite go-to when you don’t feel like being a chef at home and want a relaxed, low fuss meal on the road, in your hotel room when traveling to save money on room service.

When I have a full day of meetings back to back and don’t have time to go out for lunch, or need to do a working lunch during a brainstorming session, making a quick and easy healthy salad is a breeze.

The understated walking salad is full of vitamins and minerals that will keep your energy up while on-the-go.

The inspirational idea came from a co-worker who used to make walking tacos and sell them to raise money for our annual Christmas party.

          NO-COOK HEALTHY SALAD

            The Walking Salad

All you need is a Starbucks grande (medium-sized) cup (a good reason to keep your cup from this morning’s coffee run), a freezer ziplock bag, your favorite greens, dried fruit (cranberries or blueberries).

Add your favorite nuts (cashews or almonds), sliced fruit or vegetable (apple or carrot), your favorite salad dressing, and travel bamboo utensils.

Add one to two tablespoons of salad dressing on the bottom, followed by dried fruit, nuts, sliced vegetable or fruit, and greens on top.

When it is time to eat, dump all the ingredients in the Starbucks cup in the freezer bag.

Roll the sides down and enjoy. Once done through eating, recycle the plastic cup and freezer bag or rinse, and reuse for another day.

            Are Microgreens Healthy?

Try something new and replace your healthy salad at home greens with microgreens. Microgreens have higher vitamin, mineral and antioxidant levels than the same quantity of mature greens.

            healthy salad with microgreens

Microgreens can easily be integrated into daily meals like creating a salad mix of butter lettuce and microgreens and fruit or adding microgreens to a tuna or chicken salad sandwich.

Instead of going to the grocery store, I have found it more cost-effective to grow microgreens indoors.

The growing process is simple and easy.

All I do is add water to the seedling tray once, set the tray somewhere with low light, and in 7-10 days, I have something good to eat.

Once the microgreens are mature, I just go to my kitchen, cut some microgreens, make my favorite healthy salad dressing recipe creations to complement my fruit salad.

Why Not Grow Your Own Microgreens?

A $17-month subscription through Hamama gets me three seed quilts. The growing tray is extra. Every month I choose which three seeds I want and can pause monthly shipments.

Initially, I would receive an email when it was time to take the cover the protective cover off to let the seedlings break free and when it was time to harvest.

In order for the seedlings to germinate, they need some initial love to get started. If you live in a state with four seasons as I do, beware of humidity and cold weather.

Too much humidity in the air will cause the seedlings to get moldy.

In the spring, summer, and fall, the perfect light source for my seedlings is setting the tray of microgreens near a sunny windowsill.

Plant Your Love and Let it Grow

For the seedlings to grow, they need warmth. If a room is too cold (below 70 degrees Fahrenheit) the seeds will not germinate.

While the instructions that came with the seedling packs were easy to follow, I ran into a growing problem.

            An image of microgreens

When an early arctic blast came through Minnesota for a week in November, my microgreens didn’t grow. The room I had been using was too cold.

I was fed the confidence and given a guarantee that there was no way I could kill my lovely microgreens.

In the past, I have killed cacti before because I loved too hard. My confidence dropped. What now?

I looked online for some solutions and found a couple of heating pads specifically used for growing microgreens indoors ranging from $20-30.

After doing some additional research, I found a simple hack by repurposing a heating pad to put under the tray. That solved the problem. A heating blanket can work as well.

When an early cold comes, I simply move the tray to another room.

            Growing Microgreens Under LED Lights

Microgreens can grow under low light without soil. If there is a room that is used a lot like the kitchen, living room or bedroom, setting the tray of microgreens near a lamp or under a light source works just as well as buying one of those expensive LED lights.

News flash, you already have LED lights in your house!

As the microgreens grow, they will bend and reach out to the nearest light source. I found this out when I woke up in the morning.

A Himalayan lamp I left on overnight, to my surprise the microgreens changed directions and was reaching for the salt lamp.

When I do my summer and fall road trips, my microgreens travel with me and grow nicely in a hotel room while I go sightseeing.

EASY TO MAKE MUSHY PEAS RECIPE WITH SPLIT PEAS

Regarding food, I have an issue with any cuisine involving texture and slime. I have been informed that Americans are unique when it comes to their food profiles.

Maybe doing the smell test while giving a brief stare before putting some food down the hatch is another unique trait.

The smell of the food spewing from the open restaurant doors and street carts quickly helps me to forget about my OCD and allow my nose to lead me to where the good stuff is.

So when I ordered a side of mushy peas at a pub, I was nervous. The thought of it resembling baby food was unsettling. What would it taste like? Would I like it? These questions buzzed in my mind as I awaited my order.

It All Started With An Irish Meal

The first time I had proper mushy peas was visiting Ireland. Surprisingly, given its texture, I fell head over heels for the green side dish. It was a love at first bite. It traditionally accompanies fish and chips or hot pie, and I couldn’t get enough of it.

I had a craving for it when I got back home from my trip but failed to ask for the recipe.

Drinking a couple of pints will do that. You forget about it until you get home and wake up the next day.

My attempt to recreate the side dish with fresh peas was a disaster. It didn’t come out the same as I had in the pub. I had a chunky mess on my hands that just wasn’t as tasty. It was a disappointing moment in my culinary journey.

Fish and chips with a side of mushy peas.

After doing some research online, I learned mushy peas are made with dried marrowfat peas.

After trying out a couple of recipes online and making a few tweaks, I am a huge fan of green split peas.

The chewiness and melting texture of the peas are no contest to the pub version.

The pub culinary journey to eat the most tasty mushy peas on the planet will continue. I enjoy the art of taste testing.

            Marrowfat Peas Versus Split Peas

This easy mushy peas recipe with green split peas has more texture than the pub version I tried. I like mine a little more chunky. If there is too much green slime, I won’t eat it.

An image of a burlap bag of

Add salt and Irish butter, and you have a tasty side dish that can be eaten by itself with fish and chips, rice, or filet mignon on top.

Traditional British mushy peas use dried marrowfat peas.

I am using split peas for this recipe by Palouse Brand. They’re non-GMO and come in an old-fashioned 5lb burlap sack, which can be repurposed (if you’re good with a sewing machine or sewing by hand) as a storage bag by adding a zipper on top.

Split Peas Are Good For You

If you experience issues with getting enough iron and suffer from iron deficiency anemia, adding split peas to your diet can help increase your ferritin levels.

Split peas are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and iron and are low in fat. I wrote a post about healthy ways to manage iron-deficiency anemia.

It is a condition I have faced challenges in trying to manage, as I eat mostly a plant-based diet and minimal amounts of meat.

This cheap and easy vegetable side dish for one (if you choose not to share) not only tastes good, but the nutritional benefits of eating a side of green split peas will also improve your health.

            Ingredients

            • 1/2 cups green split peas
            • 3 cups water
            • 1/2 tsp sea salt
            • 1 tbsp unsalted butter optional
            • 1/2 tsp baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)

            Instructions

            • Add 1/2 cup split peas to a large glass bowl or 24-ounce glass container. As the peas regenerate, they will expand in the container.
            • Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) over the peas. Baking soda softens the peas, which reduces the cooking time.
            • Pour 3 cups of room temperture water into the bowl covering the peas.
            • Leave the bowl to sit on the counter for 4 hours. After 4 hours, strain the split peas and rinse with water to remove any remaining dirt and dust.
            • Add split peas to a pot. Add enough water to cover peas by 1/2-inch.
            • Cook on the stove over medium heat uncovered for 20-minutes, stirring occasionally.
            • As peas come to a boil and cook, a green foam will form and rise to the top. The foam is harmless. Skim off pea foam with a wooden spoon, discard, and reduce to a simmer.
            • After 20-minutes, turn off the heat. Depending on how mushy you like your peas, either strain the leftover liquid in the pot with a mesh strainer and put the peas back in the pot or leave the liquid.
            • Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of salt (or to taste) into the peas. Salt draws out moisture, which causes the peas to become mushier.
            • Finish by stirring in one tablespoon of unsalted butter (Kerrygold or your favorite brand of butter).

            Notes

Depending on where you live and humidity levels, the difference between 1/2-inch or 1-inch may or may not make a difference.
I found covering split peas with one-inch of water, discarding the excess at the end wasted water, thus the reason for using less water.
When covering the peas with half an inch of water, most of the water will evaporate. The pot will make a sizzling sound as the water evaporates.
If you add salt initially, you will get a soupy mess. Salt draws out moisture, which causes the peas to become mushier. Hold off adding salt until the end.
Finishing with unsalted butter marries the split peas and sea salt. The salt and butter bring out the flavor and creaminess of mushy peas.
When using salted butter instead of unsalted, reduce the amount of sea salt from 1/2 teaspoon to 1/4 teaspoon.
I switched from using salted butter to unsalted to control the amount of salt.
To make this a more healthy vegetable side dish, or if you prefer a vegan version, leave the butter out or experiment with vegan butter.
